Ua Kū, Ua 'Ulu Tee

‘Ulu was one of the ‘canoe plants brought by early Polynesian settlers to Hawai‘i around 750 AD. There are numerous chants and legends about ‘Ulu. In one famous legend, the god Kū fell in love with a human woman, married her, and raised a family. During a time of terrible famine, he buried himself in the ground and then emerged as an ‘Ulu tree to feed his family. The small root shoots that grew from the tree were spread to family and friends and is the source of all ‘ulu trees in the islands. Kū means "extended, rising upright," and the 'Ulu tree was referred to as 'ulu kū. To Hawaiians, ‘Ulu is a cultural symbol of abundance.
